World Bank VP encourages Rwanda to sustain the progress PDF Print E-mail

The visiting World Bank Vice President for Sustainable Development, Rachel Kyte, yesterday, said that Rwanda needs to focus on new approaches that can stimulate further socio-economic development if it has to sustain its current progress.

Speaking at a news conference at the end of her three-day visit, Kyte said that joint efforts between the World Bank and the Rwandan government had nurtured true transformation, mainly through improved welfare of the citizens.

ENERGY

Ensuring adequate energy is crucial to the acceleration of economic growth. And as we usher in the year 2012, all indications are positive for the energy sector in Rwanda.

One of the indicators is the Kivuwatt methane project in Kibuye, which is already underway and is expected to start producing an initial 25 MW of electricity by July 2012. This will increase Rwanda's installed capacity by 40 per cent before eventually producing 100 MW.

This fall, students in Rwanda will begin classes at Carnegie Mellon University’s Kigali campus when the U.S. research university opens its new graduate program in the East African country.
 
Bruce Krogh, Director of Carnegie Mellon in Rwanda, said the Master of Science in Information Technology graduate program is a perfect fit for the Rwandan government’s 2020 vision to become an information economy – and he added Africa as a whole is ripe with opportunity in the mobile communications arena for cloud computing, broadband and more.
“We see this as an opportunity to participate in probably the fastest growing component of the market for information and communication technology in the world right now.”
